At the dedication of the Carpenter Nature Preserve on October 5th, the office of Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb presented Jim and Nancy Carpenter with the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award!

The Sagamore of the Wabash is one of the highest honors bestowed by a sitting Governor of Indiana. It is a personal tribute presented to Hoosiers who have rendered distinguished service to the State. Among those who have received Sagamores have been astronauts, presidents, ambassadors, artists, musicians and ordinary citizens who have contributed greatly to our state heritage.

Jim and Nancy Carpenter are the founders of Wild Birds Unlimited, an award-winning national franchisor of more than 300 retail stores that sell bird feeders and bird food. Long-time conservationists, the Carpenters have donated land at the Brown County Nature Conservancy and donated money to create the Wild Birds Unlimited native pollinator meadow at the  Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields. The couple has also been involved in conservation efforts in Colorado and Costa Rica. Nancy is the founder and president of the Zionsville Parks Foundation.
